How to Attract Orders in a Modern World by Photo Bake Shop

Kelli Fusaro, owner of PhotoBakeShop, home based bakery shop business.Hello, this is Kelli, owner of Photo Bake Shop, and today I’m going to talk to you about how you can attract orders in a modern world.  I find that every “bright idea” leads to your next problem, so this session is about why it’s important to stay with the current trends while looking ahead at what’s next.

As I think back over the last 20 years, I can see how business marketing strategies have changed. If you were to open a business 20 years ago you would probably have needed a storefront and a sign outside plus a phone and a cash register, and most likely promote your business with an ad in the local newspaper.  You or someone who worked for you would have to work at the store location at least 8 hours a day, which took time and money to manage.  Luckily, the solution came along about 10 years ago, with the internet, and store owners at that point needed websites in addition to having a store.

With an online presence, clients could find you fairly easily online.  By viewing your website, products and services could be viewed in the comfort of an office or home.  Products could be viewed, but not ordered.  So, the next solution was to have a shopping carts developed and added to websites. With that, the ecommerce evolved, and shopping carts became important to most online businesses. Whether you are in the United States or anywhere in the world, you have the ability to order online and receive products by mail.  An added bonus is that consumers do not have to pay sales tax if they live outside of your business state, so there’s another incentive to why everyone loves the idea of ordering online.

The next problem . . .  remember I said that every solution leads to your next problem?  Of course, it always sounds great in the beginning.  Internet business did solve the overhead of having a physical store and paying all the employees wages and gas expenses, etc., but have we now created a bigger problem?  Since internet businesses are on the rise, so is your online competition.  Plus, everyone shops online and looks for bargains so how do you get noticed and become a recognized name brand?  Are you easily found on page 1 google?  Do you ever shop websites on pages 2 or 3 of google?  Probably not.  How do you get on page 1 and stay on page 1 with all of your competition?  It’s about getting recognized among the millions.  When you had a physical store, you needed to be aware of your competition in your neighborhood, now you need to be aware of being found among your competition in the world.

The next blessing and curse, dare I say this word, Social Media.  It’s everywhere: Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, blogging, and Instagram, Twitter (twitface as Jay Leno would say). All of these social media networks evolved, so now it’s just not enough to have a website and a shopping cart because social media is here at least until the next trend comes along.  We have no choice but to jump in.  I personally found this to be so time consuming, that I hired a marketing  team that handles our social media posts.  It was almost a full time job keeping up with the posts and ads with tweets and updates along with special offers, deals and new ideas.  Yikes!  You don’t have to do it yourself.  In fact, it’s part of our licensing package that we can do this for you.

No matter what your goals are, it’s important to realize that business is constantly changing.  The strategy that works today, will most likely not work 10 years from now.  We have to adjust our business to the trends and stay slightly ahead in order to grow and thrive.

Does anyone in business pick up the phone anymore?  Most orders we receive are directly through a shopping cart or clients emailing for quotes and letting us know what they want by email.  Email has replaced phone ordering.  In fact, we’re in a day and age where nobody in business seems to want to pick up a phone.  For the record, no matter what this trend is, I want you to know that I still recommend picking up the phone to establish relationships with your clients and confirm orders, etc.  I’m sure you experience this reality every week:  You have a question or concern and call a business.  Most of the time you receive a voice message like this:  Press 1 for this, press 2 for that, 3 for the other thing.  A “live” person rarely answers the phone.  Hello?  Many times the person answering is overseas with an accent that we are straining to understand. We’re all tired of it.  It saved money, but it’s not good business.  Out of frustration, we try to figure out the answers ourselves or email questions and then place our orders with the company anyway out of default.  I feel like there’s no one left to complain to because no one answers, so we’ve been forced to comply.  The new business model is “the lights are on, but no one is home”.  And, this was the solution to the problem of high phone bills, having toll free phone number lines, and employees to answer the phone.  The problem is there’s no integrity because it shows a lack of caring toward people who want to give you their money and do business with you.  Should there be someone with a clear, understanding voice responsible for answering the phone when we have questions?  Are those days gone for good?  Regardless of this trend, we need to take the time to make sure our clients are left with the experience of excellence in every aspect of business.  There’s more to business than just delivering products and services.  We all notice that the root of this trend is greed and stinginess.  What about an experience of knowing you are in good hands and cared for and excited about coming back? I believe that no matter how times change and evolve, it’s important to do the right thing and communicate in ways that leave your peeps with a positive experience.

Our purpose, at Photo Bake Shop, is to look ahead at business trends for you and continue to evolve with integrity with a system that works.  As you can see, there are many aspects to business which can seem overwhelming.  We set it up and educate our licensees throughout the process.  We custom design a stunning website that meets your needs and will get noticed by the specific market and clients you want.
